The last month has been devoted to training David Kent. David is the current UK record holder in CNF 62 mts (breast stroking down and back).
David has a current best of 68 mts CNF. He trained with me for 3 weeks in October 2012 and during the winter was following a remote coaching program we put together. This program focused first of all on flexibility. Then on breath hold, both empty and full lung, static and dry dynamic exercises.
Other elements of the winter training were strength exercises with body weight and a focus on anaerobic fitness. The result was encouraging David arrived with regularly achievable statics of 7:00 mins plus, and 3:45 min with empty lung. His level of thoracic and full
body flexibility were excellent as was his anaerobic fitness. David is also very strong.
We were joined at first by Walter Chevescu who had trained with us in 2012. Walter, in spite of maybe the worst sea conditions of this year in
10 days of diving added 13 mts to his personal best and overcame equalisation problems, finishing with a very creditable FIM of 47 mts. He
was prevented of reaching his target of 50mts, by sea conditions that kept us frustrated and dry for the last 2 days of his stay. Walter had also been following our remote coaching program over the winter and had achieved a PB of 6:50 static.
David’s training was non specific at this stage, he had taken 7 months off work to train this year, we began at once to prepare for equalisation
at depth, we trained empty lung descents (fully empty not FRC), with mouthfill on the surface, gradually increasing the depth to 20 mts. These
were very slow descents, on alternate days we did slow pull downs to 50mts with a hold on the bottom for 1 min, never more than 2 or maximum 3 dives then empty lung.
Every day David kept up his flexibility and strength program.
The next stage involved Drops (variable weight, head down to 60 + mts) and ascents breast stroking. This was to add the element of speed into the equalisation, the descent to 60mts took 44 secs! this showed mastery of my version of cheekfill, it was with a single mouthfill from the surface.
Next month I will be in Dahab till 2nd or 3rd of July to continue deep perhaps very deep training with David. He is by far the most exciting and
gifted diver I have met in many years.
